Week 65 and 66

June 21, 2017
Wednesday, Day 454
Day 94 back in NY
Pday!
We drove over to Poughkeepsie where our Zone Leaders live. We met up at a park and played tennis, spike ball, and then I wrote emails while the other elders played a pick up basketball game with some guys on the court. We went to the P's and dropped off a thank you card. Then we went to the E family’s home. We shared a message with them and went to the church to report on lessons and contact some people.

Thursday, Day 455
Day 95 back in NY

Zone conference started at 8:30am-4pm at the Newbourgh building. Afterward we did daily planning, comp study, had dinner, and did daily contacting. We did some look ups and made contact with a LA family that moved into our branch boundaries recently. We stopped by knocked their door and out came one of the sons. His name is M, he's about our age. It was getting late and the mosquitos were out feasting on us so we didn't stay very long, just long enough to meet him and invite him to church for the linger longer.

Friday, Day 456
Day 96 back in NY

Since we had Zone conference yesterday we had weekly planning today. Planned for a couple hours then ate lunch and planned again for a couple hours.

We planned on just stopping by to leave a note for J reminding him about the Linger longer at church, but he ended up being home and came outside as we were walking away. We stopped and talked for a minute… we listened to him as he talked about another interesting topic he was reading an article on in the New York Times. Then we went inside and read together the story of the Two-thousand Strippling Warriors. We discussed it for a minute and he liked the story.

We then had an APF with the Book of Mormon board down on Main St. that was pretty sweet. Lots of cars drive by and it's 35mph so it's pretty slow traffic and EVERYONE slows and looks at us so it's definitely effective. We talked to a handful of people, honestly there weren't too many people out walking the streets today. But we gave a few copies out, had a couple strong conversations about the gospel and the Book of Mormon, and a lot of people saw us and that's what matters! It was a great APF.

Around 6pm we cleaned up and at 6:30 we had an appointment with a member in our branch, we talked about patriarchal blessings with Brother D.

At 7:30 we had correlation at Brother W. Afterwards he made us sit down and he made us dinner. I love the W's! They ALWAYS feed us! Jamaicans are wonderful! We had Jamaican patties and ice cream for dessert.

Saturday, Day 457
Day 97 back in NY

Unfortunately the O's in our branch are moving… so this morning after studies we went over to their home and helped them move EVERYTHING out of their house and into the moving truck. We started with their 100+year old piano once we got that into the truck everything else was pretty easy. A majority of it was boxes. We helped out from 10:30am - 2pm then we went home and washed up before going to Brother K’s. Visiting Brother K is so fun, we shared a message with him and then he asked, “Shall we sing a couple songs?” (And he's the blind member in our branch) we said of course! So he went over to the piano and began playing The Lord is my Light and Put your shoulder to the wheel, so he played and we sang for him. Then we went to the church to write our progress report, do daily contact, and comp study. We did some look-ups then had dinner. We made some phone calls then drove over to Brother H's. He's having a pot luck picnic tomorrow after church at 3pm so we went over to offer to help set up for it. We placed a table and some chairs on the front lawn. We helped him move around some things and set the BBQ in place. The sunset and it was time to head home.

Sunday, Day 458
Day 98 back in NY

Today was sad… church was great! But after church we had a Linger longer. It was for the O family since they drive home to Utah today. We love the O's and are sad to watch them go. After the Linger longer we went to Brother H's and had another meal, we met some of his family and his neighbors. We were there for about and hour and 45 minutes. Towards the end of our time there a couple of guys showed up with a friend of theirs. We knew their friend but not the 2 guys. We talked with them and got to know that they are from Harlem and so I talked about the church down there and the church they go to is really close, we exchanged info and we sent their info to the elders in Harlem. So it was pretty productive. We were getting fed a lot today! Longer linger, brother H's picnic, then Sister P invited us over for dinner. So between the picnic and dinner we went to do some look ups and did some studies and daily contact. When we got to the P's, Brother P was there; he was outside and so was his son Joe. They were trying to start their little dirt bike. We helped them jump it and jimmy rig it to keep it running. There's a piece in the handle where the throttle cable fits and it was broken so the throttle wouldn't catch to rev the engine. So we took out the front brake and since it has a similar pulling effect we hooked the throttle to the front brake and so to get the bike to ride you just pull front brake which was confusing! So little J was riding around on the bike and trying to do some wheelies… after a few he came flying down the driveway in an attempt to wheelie and smashed into a tree! It was so funny! The bike was fine, he was fine and the tree was fine... he was laughing so hard! Then we got called inside to eat dinner. Sister P was a little late coming home so we were a bit behind and halfway through dinner the Sisters showed up for their appointment with the P's haha so we quickly finished up and were on our way.

Monday, Day 459
Day 99 back in NY

Leadership and district meeting were good as usual. Unfortunately we didn't have any set appointments today so we planned, we did some look-ups and then J called us and asked if we were available today to help him out.

We were at the campus when he called so we told him we could be there around 4-4:30. After getting off the phone with him, Elder & Sister M called, they said they were in New Paltz at the Sister’s apartment and wanted to know if we were around so they could inspect our apartment. So we went home, about 5 minutes later they showed up, they inspected the apartment and all was well.

It was about 4:30 so we drove over to J’s house. He just needed help moving his dog kennel, afterward he had some questions so we stuck around and had a short discussion.

Tuesday, Day 460
Day 100 back in NY

Today's plans were to do some more look ups and visit some people. One of the families we visited, the husband is a member but hasn't been to church since he was a kid. We stopped by like we do each Tuesday since he has work off, the kids were in the pool and he was outside taking apart a broken swing set. We talked for a bit; he's generally not too interested in hearing a message so when we tried to bring up something he changed the subject. We then got onto the topic of motorcycles; he and his wife ride together on his bike. He told us about the ride they went on together on Sunday. They picked a place to eat on a map and started their ride.

At 6pm we met up with the Branch President, President C and his wife at this Italian Pizza place called Pomo Doro. Half of he building is pizza and the other half is an ice cream shop. The food was great we ordered a couple huge meatballs, a salad, onion rings, and buffalo pizza. We ate and discussed President C’s vision and goals for the branch. Then they took us next door for ice cream! We went outside and ate ice cream and talked about them and got to know them a little more.

Wednesday, Day 461
Day 101 back in NY
Pday!

Today was all right, we are both pretty much out of money and we haven't gotten our monthly fund yet, so we skipped shopping, did our laundry and went to the church. I'm enjoying being poor, it's teaching me so much and preparing me for when I'm a student and young and married. I think we spent most of our time at the church. We wrote emails and played spike ball with the sisters. After Pday we had a couple appointments set. Our first one was with our new investigator T. This is the first time we have taught him during a sit down lesson, we went over the restoration and he followed it pretty well. He has a Masters in Theology and is continuing as a student studying religion and scriptures. He seems fairly interested and has accepted our invitation to baptism. We left his place and went over to Brother & Sister E’s; we taught the family and focused on prayer and repentance. The kids didn't seem to have much of an understanding of it, but they were along the right track.

On our way home we stopped by a potential investigator, R. It was late, after 8pm and we knew he has young kids so we didn't want to be long; we just planned on setting an appointment with him. We got his phone number, which we didn't have before, so we should be able to meet with him soon.

Thursday, Day 462
Day 102 back in NY

This morning we had a conference call, it's always so cool to hear the miracles going on in the mission. After the call we went over to the church to begin weekly planning. By the time we finished it was about 2pm. We then went around town looking for opportunities to do service in the community, we stopped by the Elting Library, and they said we could stock shelves and dust. Then we went to The Salvation Army and they said that we could come back next Thursday and they would have more information for us. Last but not least we went to The Family of New Paltz, they have been around for a very long time, providing help to many people in many different ways; food, clothing, housing assistance, drug recovery… etc. they every so often get a large shipment of food. Unfortunately they just had one last month and the next one is in September, so they said they would update us on projects and things that we could help out with.

For part of our daily contact we started sending quotes from General Conference talks, scriptures to go along with them, and our testimony at the end. We would type them out on our phone and send them to all our members and investigators. We call it our Gospel Minute.

Today's was:
By President Dieter F. Uchtdorf Second Counselor in the First Presidency

“As long as we are willing to rise up again and continue on the path, … we can learn something from failure and become better and happier.”

Romans 5:3-5

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, which is given unto us.

I know that we are here on earth to be tried, tested, and over all to learn how to become as our Father in Heaven is. As we do our best to not only endure to the end but to enjoy to the end. We will learn and acquire attributes of Christ.

Miracle today:
We were on our way to an appointment and we drove past a members home, who when we last stopped by said they were moving that day. So we knew they wouldn't be there after that day. Well, we are driving by and happen to see a kid sitting on the steps by the front door and a dog by his side. We stopped the car and got out, we approached the kid on his phone on the steps of the house and asked if he was a Styles. He said he was and that his name is M. We started talking to him, he then yelled inside for his mom, she came out and M was talking about how he wants to get baptized and be missionaries like us. (M is 17) we were super stoked to hear that, we found out hat they won't be moving now till next Saturday. We set an appointment to come back tomorrow and meet with M to begin teaching him the discussions and prepare him for baptism.

June 30, 2017
Friday, Day 463
Day 103 back in NY

We are going on a split tomorrow so we did out progress report today. After sending it off to our branch council members, we sent out our daily Gospel Minute.

Today's was:
By Richard G. Scott Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

“Scriptures are like packets of light that illuminate our minds and give place to guidance and inspiration from on high.”

1Nephi 17:13

13 And I will also be your light in the wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you, if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments; wherefore, inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land; and ye shall know that it is by me that ye are led.

I know that as we read the scriptures, ponder the message we receive, and pray for confirmation, our minds will be illuminated, that we may know that it is Christ who guides us.

Our Branch Mission Leader text us this morning and told us he was in Atlanta all of a sudden… so we had our correlation meeting after lunch with the sisters and talked about the things we needed to discuss. Then we had our appointment with M, we came to the house, knocked the door and he let us in. After our opening prayer, his mom came home and said she needed to leave to Kingston to do something and wouldn't be able to give M a ride to his aunts if he didn't go with her in 30 minutes. Well these 30 minutes went by FAST! In the beginning we found out quickly that M doesn't have much of a knowledge of who God or Jesus Christ are. So we took a few minutes in the beginning to help him understand who they were before we taught more about them and the restoration. By the time our limit came to an end, we had only gotten to the 2nd to last point, we didn't have much time to talk about the Book of Mormon, but we left him with a copy and the invitation to read it.
This kid is awesome!

We didn't have an appointment with J, but we stopped by and gave him the Family A Proclamation to the World. We talked a bit about it and told him that this is a church's document that supports and tells people about our standing with families.

Our appointment with T fell through, he text us and said his wife won the fight and he has some errands to run with her, lol so we need to reschedule.

Saturday, Day 464
Day 104 back in NY

This morning we split and to start the day off I was stressing out a little bit. Sometime late yesterday the Sisters told us of an appointment they set for us with a member of the branch to do some service. So all morning I was trying to plan and call people to find a 3rd male to go with us so we could help her out.

Long story short, after calling Brother K several times (because he is the closest to her and we have an appointment set with him today) someone finally picked up the phone. It was Brother K’s nephew (a non-member), J. We told him our situation and asked if a Brother K was available to be our 3rd male. He said Brother K wouldn't be home till 1, but that he could come with us. As we were giving him information and telling him we were 5 minutes away from his home he said oh Brother K is coming up the driveway now. When we got to his house, Brother K excitingly agreed to come with us and J volunteered to follow behind us and help us out for a bit. A MIRACLE! Trying my best to be obedient and find a 3rd male for the appointment we were blessed with 2 men. The whole ride there Brother K sat in the back seat and talked about how excited he was, that this was his first service project with the church. It was so fun!

After helping Sister R, we had lunch and gave her a blessing for her back. On the ride home, Brother a K talked about how he needs to bare his testimony at church tomorrow on service.

It was so awesome, because Brother K being blind sat in a chair at the table for about 30 minutes before lunch as we helped Sister R. Anytime I came in to check on him he would make uplifting/encouraging comments to us about how well we are doing. He's awesome! We love him!

Our Gospel Minute message today was:
By Elder Ronald A. Rasband Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

By divine assignment, the Holy Ghost inspires, testifies, teaches, and prompts us to walk in the light of the Lord.

D&C 87:8
8 Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold, it cometh quickly, saith the Lord. Amen.

I know that as we stand in holy places, we allow the Spirit to be present in our lives and as we are willing to act on that which we receive from the Spirit we are more inclined to receive divine help.

We had an APF for about an hour on Main Street then it began to rain! So we packed up and went to the church. We unloaded the Big Book of Mormon board and went to Brother W’s he said he wanted us to come help him change his oil, (so he could teach us more or less) haha but it was great, it was raining still so we helped him out.

Sunday, Day 465
Day 105 back in NY

ALRIGHTY! Today was pretty sweet! We woke up at 4am (not so sweet), Elders Howard & Hughes stayed the night last night so we could carpool to Newbourgh. When we got there we got into the van and the APs drove us down to the city. We drive through Kingsbridge The Bronx and stopped at the Inwood chapel in Manhattan, we then got on the subway and went from Dykeman street down to 66th & Columbus Ave, (the Temple). We went inside and there was just a wonderful spirit, we joined our sacred sacrament meeting with the Manhattan 1st family Ward. It was also fast Sunday. So walking in pro a room full of missionaries and members you could feel the Spirit of fasting and reverence. Everyone was prepared to be taught from on high, by an Apostle of God, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf. We had the privilege of hearing from President and Sister Uchtdorf’s Grandson, daughter, then Sister Uchtdorf and lastly President Uchtdorf.

There was a common theme spoken from each of them. President and Sister Uchtdorf spoke about the plan of salvation and how every day is a new beginning. They encouragingly spoke to us, saying that we have many opportunities each day to change and become better. They spoke of the plan of salvation and that if we understand the plan our Father in Heaven has for us then we wouldn't get down on ourselves for the mistakes we make, knowing that we just need to try a little harder and be a little better.
Because of the original wards amount of people and the additional 200 missionaries, our sacrament meeting took some time, which I was most grateful for. If there was anything I took from this meeting it was to take advantage of and appreciate the time during the Sacrament to truly focus on the Savior. We had 5 priests at the table blessing and passing forward the trays to the 15 others passing the sacrament. Even with the amount of priesthood holders passing the sacrament it took a good while for the sacrament to be completed. During the sacrament I opened the Book of Mormon and read 3Nephi 18. The whole chapter and I was able to better appreciate and understand the Sacrament.
After the sacrament meeting was over, President Uchtdorf wanted a picture with the missionaries. All 200 of us were up behind the pulpit and we took a picture with him. I was in a horrible spot and I don't think all of me was seen in the photo but oh well.

The NY NY North mission with President Uchtdorf

Tyler is in the 2nd row from the top and only half of his face is showing from behind a Sister Missionary

We then made our journey back to Inwood and back home from there. By the time we got back home all 3 of our church meetings were over. We went to the church and got some bread and a sacrament cup for Brother M so we could administer the Sacrament to him.

Our Gospel Minute for today was:
By Elder Jeffrey R. Holland Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

“Keep loving. Keep trying. Keep trusting. Keep believing. Keep growing. Heaven is cheering you on today, tomorrow, and forever.”

Isaiah 40:29

29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

As President Uchtdorf said during our Sacred Sacrament meeting "Everyday is a new beginning..." as we keep loving. Keep trying. Keep trusting. Keep believing. Keep growing. Knowing that Heaven is cheering us on, we will be blessed with power and strength to continue in this life, pressing forward through the life experiences we face.

July 3, 2017
Monday, Day 466
Day 106 back in NY

Today wasn't very well planned, we ended up working on our branch list for a couple hours to organize and better be able to see who is still in the area and find notes about them. It was very helpful and needed.

Our Gospel Minute for today was:
By Elder Edward Dube Of the Seventy

In the sight of the Lord, it is not so much what we have done or where we have been but much more where we are willing to go.

1Nephi 3:7
7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

As we begin to truly understand principles of the gospel and become converted to the plan our Father in Heaven has for us, we can be blessed with faith as the prophets of old and modern times. Nephi was blessed with experiences including the Lord where he was unwavering in faith. He was willing to “go and do”. As we take the good serious and take the time to understand it we too will have experiences that will build our faith, that we may be unwavering.

Tuesday, Day 467
Day 107 back in NY
Happy 4th!

I am grateful for our freedom, I'm grateful for America.

Today we did some look ups and made contact with T later in the evening, he doesn't have a phone so we stopped by and we were lucky to see him, we planned on coming by again later in the week for an appointment.

We didn't have really anything going in today for the 4th so it wasn't what it could have been. But it was what it was. My 4th of July consisted of making a bonfire, a member had a huge pile of wood she wanted burned so we started the fire for her and fed it for a few hours. I got a couple gnarly splinters before I realized I should put gloves on... then I hit my head on her shed Lol, I couldn't tell how deep it was... it didn't bleed very long so it must not have been very bad at all. But the fire was huge and hot (obviously) with the sun out and the heat of the fire, I got some color to my skin.

Well it was safe and that's pretty much all we did.

His injury from hitting his head on the shed

Our Gospel Minute for today was:
Susan W. Tanner Young Women General President

As we search, pray, and believe, we will recognize miracles in our lives and become miracle workers in the lives of others.

D&C 90:24
24 Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted one with another.

When we pray, we must pray specifically and I mean specifically. With out details and exceptions we cannot expect exactly what we want. We must ask in specific faith and believe in that which we pray for, with righteousness desires to act on that which we receive from our Heavenly Father, then will we recognize miracles, and have the blessing to preform miracles in the lives of others.

Love you all! Thank you for the prayers! They are recognized!
Patience. Love. Faith
Much love,

Elder Newbold
